October 20 - 22, 2008. DFC personnel attended the HTCIA conference in Atlantic City, NJ. Sessions attended include cell seizure certification course and MAC acquisition.

DFC Spoke at HTCIA New England.
September 30, 2008. The DFC gave a talk on "Software Write Blocking" at the New England Chapter of the High Technology Crime Investigators Association (HTCIA) in Boston.

DFC Provided RI Bar Association CLE Course.
September 24, 2008. The DFC taught a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) course for the RI Bar Association on "Digital Evidence".

DFC hosted Anti-Cyberterrorism Seminar.
September 15, 2008. The DFC hosted the Anti-Cyberterrorism seminar on the URI campus. The seminar brought together leaders in the state of Rhode Island who control computer systems where unauthorized access or disruption could have a direct impact on public safety and welfare. The seminar was introduced by Congressman James R. Langevin, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Cyber Security, Science and Technology.

DFC Obtains Department of Justice Grants.
August 1, 2008. The DFC has been awarded two new grants totaling approximately a half a million dollars from the U.S. Department of Justice to develop new computer and network forensics tools.

DFC Investigator ACE Certified.
July 15, 2008. Kristen McCooey, DFC Senior Investigator, was one of the first group to receive Access Data Certified Examiner (ACE) testing on their FTK 2.0 suite. ACE certification is one of the leading certifications available for forensic examiners.

DFC Releases Reports on Forensics Tools.
July 7, 2008. The DFC released two reports on its evaluation of the correctness and speed of software write blockers, tools to preserve evidence in forensic investigations. The reports are available on our research link.

DFC joins HTCIA.
July 1, 2008. DFC investigators joined the High Technology Crime Investigation Association (HTCIA), the leading association of the computer forensic investigators. The DFC will be presenting at the Sept 30 Northeast HTCIA conference and will have a booth at the October National HTCIA conference.

DFC Provided Network Forensics Training to IT Professionals.
June 19-23, 2008. The DFC provided training for a group of IT professionals in the form of a network forensics seizure exercise. The four day exercise involved guided seizure of evidence from workstations with a wide range of hardware and operating systems as well as live network data center with a wide range of server hardware, operating systems, applications and storage.

DFC to had a booth at RI Bar Association Annual Meeting.
June 12-13, 2008. The DFC had a booth at the RI Bar Association's Annual Meeting in Providence.

DFC Contract to Implement State Computer Crimes Unit Lab.
May 1, 2008. The DFC has been contracted to implement the Rhode Island State Police Computer Crimes Unit Digital Forensics Analysis Lab. The lab will allow law enforcement investigators from across the state to collaborate remotely to a central analysis facility. Its design is patterned after federal law enforcement labs with some enhancements.

DFC Attends Access Data Training.
May 13-15, 2008. A DFC member is in Boston for Access Data's Internet Forensics class.
April 22-24, 2008. Two DFC members participated in Access Data's online Windows Forensics - Vista class.

DFC Hosted X-Ways Training.
April 7-11, 2008. The DFC hosted Stefan Fleischmann of X-Ways Software Technology to host a 5 day course on X-Ways Forensics and File Systems. The training was held at the URI Providence campus for law enforcement specializing in Digital Forensics.

DFC presents at NIJ Conference in Alabama.
March 18, 2008. Two members of the DFC went down to Point Clear, Alabama, to the NIJ's Applied Technologies Conference to present work on NIJ funded research projects Human Image Detection and Steganography Detection.

DFC contracted by Rhode Island State Police.
February 15, 2008. The DFC was contracted by the Rhode Island State Police to provide long term consulting to their Computer Crimes unit in issues concerning digital forensics technology.

DFC contracted by the Institute of International Sport
Jan 21, 2008. The DFC was contracted by the Institute of International Sport to provide internet safety software and training to participants in the 2008 Scholar Athlete Games.

DFC Co-Hosts Network Forensics Training for Law Enforcement
December 17-21, 2007. The DFC hosted a network forensics training for computer crimes law enforcement agents in R.I. Agents from the FBI, NCIS, RI State Police and local police attended the 5 day training covering network related forensic issues.

DFC To Co-Host High School Digital Forensics Day
Sept 27, 2007. The DFC will co-host with the URI Computer Science Department the first RI High School Digital Forensics Day. The day will give RI high school students the chance to learn about the field of digital forensics. Details.

DFC Speaks at SNENUG
Sept 19, 2007. The DFC gave an invited talk to the Southern New England Network Users Group meeting. The talk covered the basics of digital forensics and incident response.

DFC Obtains Homeland Security Grant.
Sept 10, 2007. The DFC partnered with the RI State Police, Warwick Police, Providence Police, and State Of Rhode Island to obtain a $400,000 grant to initiate the Rhode Island Cyberterrorism Task Force. Participants from these organizations will cooperate in training and digital forensics investigations.

DFC Retained by Teachers Unions.
Sept. 2007. The DFC was retained by two different large teachers unions to perform digital forensics to support members in administrative hearings over dismissal.

DFC Attends High Tech Crime Investigators (HTCIA) Conference.
Aug 27, 2007. DFC personnel attended the HTCIA conference in San Diego, CA. Included were sessions on Vista Forensics, Macintosh Forensics, Cell Phone Forensics, Digital Forensics Law, Cryptography, and EDiscovery.

DFC Completes Internal Police Investigation.
Aug 15, 2007. The DFC completed a hard drive investigation for a Rhode Island police department internal matter.

DFC Presents at International Identification and Forensics Conference.
July 26,2007. DFC gave presentations on steganography detection and on hard drive analysis for human images at the International Identification and Forensics Conference in San Diego, CA.

DFC Presents at the National Institute of Justice Conference.
July 22, 2007. DFC personnel participated as an invited member on a panel on digital forensics at the National Institute of Justice Conference in Arlington, VA.

DFC Retained By OSHEAN.
July 1, 2007. The DFC was retained by OSHEAN to provide digital forensics and data recovery services for its members. OSHEAN members include organizations in Rhode Island and Massachusetts from institutions of higher education, Rhode Island state government, and health care organizations.

DFC Attends Access Data Forensics Boot Camp.
June 24, 2007. DFC personnel attended Access Data's digital forensics boot camp. Included were sessions on the Forensics Tool Kit (FTK) and Password Recovery Tool Kit (PRTK - password cracking software).

DFC Assists With First Online Digital Forensics Course.
May 21, 2007. The DFC assisted with the URI Digital Forensics program offering its first completely online course. The 10 week course on Operating Systems from a forensics perspective is the first of a series of online training courses that the URI program and the DFC will offer. These courses include full semester academic college courses through the URI Digital Forensics program, as well as focused training modules. The online courses are delivered by streaming video lecture and some, including this first course, include extensive hands-on exercises through the use of virtualization.
